Improving Your Health and Wellness

At Bella D'ora Spa we are truly interested in wellness. In our quest to help our guests achieve optimal health, we have added a new, non invasive technology to measure antioxidant levels. That technology is the BioPhotonic Scanner. Because antioxidants are the body's frontline defense against 'free radicals' that constantly affect our cells, having an accurate measurement of our personal antioxidant levels is important.

What are Free Radicals?

Scientists believe free radicals contribute to the aging process. It’s a fact of life that we age every second of every day. And, although we can’t stop the aging process, we can take steps to improve our health as we age. Certain known causes of free radical damage (such as smoking or sun exposure) can have negative impacts on how we look and feel. Pollution, exposure to toxic chemicals – even the air we breathe creates free radicals within our bodies.

Why should we be concerned about free radicals?

Free radicals are highly reactive, short lived molecules that can damage proteins, fats, and even the DNA inside our bodies. Every day our cells receive 75,000 free radical 'hits' to their DNA. Most of the damage can be repaired by enzymes inside the body, but the damage that can’t be repaired accumulates over time - and can add to the problems associated with the normal aging process

What are Antioxidants?

There are many different kinds of antioxidants that work together to help fight the harmful effects of free radicals. Our bodies produce some antioxidants and other important antioxidants are consumed in our diets. All of these antioxidants together form a powerful system to support good antioxidant health.

Antioxidants can actually capture or neutralize free radicals - and, therefore, stop the chain reaction. One of the most powerful classes of antioxidants is carotenoids. Carotenoid antioxidants can help break the chain reactions of free radical damage.

What is the BioPhotonic Scanner and what does it do?

The BioPhotonic Scanner , available at Bella D'ora Spa, is a revolutionary tool that enables people to identify (and measure ) the level of carotenoid antioxidant protection they currently have - and to improve that, if they choose.

How does it work?

Sir C. V. Raman discovered the technology on which the scanner is based in the 1920s and was awarded the Nobel Prize for the discovery of the Raman Spectroscopy in 1930.

While that was in the 1920s, it was not until computer, optical and laser technology reached its current degree of sophistication, that the concept became more practical.

Raman's discovery proved that there are certain molecules, like carotenoids, that can be 'excited' with a certain wavelength of laser light. The molecules then begin to resonate in very particular ways, releasing a very specific light signal - an altered wavelength - that can then be measured. This discovery was revolutionary in its time, but computer and laser technologies could not fully apply the concept until recently. In the last ten years researchers at a major university, led by Dr. Werner Gellerman, started putting all these pieces of technology together.

The scanner technology represents a tremendous scientific breakthrough. Because carotenoids are found throughout the body as part of the body’s antioxidant network, scientists believed the technology could be used to measure carotenoid levels in human tissue. The scientists at Pharmanex® collaborated with Dr. Gellerman to develop the BioPhotonic Scanner. By simply placing the palm of your hand in front of a safe, low-energy blue light laser, you can immediately obtain a reading of your carotenoid antioxidant levels — your skin carotenoid score. This skin carotenoid score has been proven to be an indication of your overall antioxidant protection.

That’s why it’s important to get measured and know your Skin Carotenoid Score. After your initial measurement, you can take steps to raise your antioxidant level by eating properly (fruits and vegetables) and taking supplements. You can track your skin carotenoid score - and observe (and document) improved carotenoid antioxidant levels.By supplementing your diet with products like LifePak®nano - and being scanned every 60 days at Bella D'ora- you will be able to track your body’s skin carotenoid score and determine if your antioxidant level is changing and improving.

At Bella D'ora Spa, we will measure your antioxidant level with the Bio Photonic Scanner and, should you need or want them, provide supplements to clients interested in improving their skin carotenoid score. That’s why it’s important to get measured and know your score. By supplementing your diet with LifePak®nano and being scanned at Bella D'ora Spa, you can track your body’s skin carotenoid score and determine if your personal antioxidant level. We hope you will!
